Democrats can win on terror

One of the things that bug me about terror threats is how the news media and bloggers rant that this will be a boon to the Republicans. Do they ever get tired of repeating misconceptions and talking points. John McKinnon in theWall Street Journal today:

The foiled British bombing plot is likely to benefit President Bush and the Republican Party, at least in the short term, by reminding voters of national-security concerns and the war on terror -- two areas where the president and his party have earned high marks from U.S. citizens.

You can find that same rhetoric in almost all of the conservative media. Let's suppose they are partially right. Lets suppose that this does turn voter attention to the war on terror and make it a big issue in November. Will it benifit the Republicans like the MSM has let it do so for the last 5 years? In a Washington Post poll released two days ago the following question was asked:

Which political party, the (Democrats) or the (Republicans), do you trust to do a better job handling the U.S. campaign against terrorism?

Republican 38
Democrat 46

Looks to me that if this were going to be a boon to either side, it would be the Democrats. Why would that be? Could it be that the republicans are so incompetent that they couldn't even be trusted to put the cat out, let long protect the country? I think that might be it.

One other interesting question:

Do you approve or disapprove of the way Bush is handling the US campaign against terrorism

Approve 47%
Disapprove 50%

We do go through a lot of extremely non political terror alerts during even numbered years.

Sometimes we don't find out for days:

or weeks

What bothers me most is that if a Democrat is elected President next Nov, and we withdraw our troops from Iraq, then everything we have done there, all lives that were lost would be for nothing. As Iran/Syria, backers of terrorist organizations will greater influence the future of Iraq, creating yet another problem. The Arab world will see the US as impotent in fighting the war on terror and will more freely attack the US without consequence. Whether we are there or not, they will still hate us, its in their bibles to kill americans. Read the Islam bible, its nothing but hate for us. A democratic view toward Israel would make Israel less powerful again Hezbollah, and would most likely bring its to its doom, which is noted in the Bible as the war on Armageddon. I expect with the way the world is now, as bad as times are now, that there will be a Democrat President next election, this would be the best time for it, to create a world of chaos, unlimited attacks on the US, and Israels annhilation. Marking the end of days. This war in the middle east will determine just that, read Revelation of the King James Version of the Bible. Of course you probably will dismiss this like most democrats would, most democrats are not Christians. Regardless, this is my view on the facts as I've been keeping tabs on world events for years, especially in Israel, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Russia, China, and the US.

bob,

Couple of issues here

hen everything we have done there, all lives that were lost would be for nothing.

Ever heard the term "throwing good money after bad"?

A democratic view toward Israel would make Israel less powerful again Hezbollah, and would most likely bring its to its doom, which is noted in the Bible as the war on Armageddon.

First thing, what makes you think that the Dem's would be less supportive? I refuse to support the idea that our foreign policy should be dictated by your religeon any more than you should support the idea that the islamic talmud should dictate it.

most democrats are not Christians

This is the reason why most republicans suck, stupid blanket generalization with no basis in fact.

Sorry, but I dismiss your logic.

I'm a little curious about the statement "Whether we are there or not, they will still hate us, its in their bibles to kill americans. Read the Islam bible, its nothing but hate for us." Now, I admit I'm generally no fan of Muslims, except for the American version and a couple of others, but nothing I know of in the Quran is "hate for us". If you consider "us", as Americans, to be Christians and Jews(though I'm not either), then the Quran supports tolerance of "us", if not exactly enthusiasm. I'm the pagan they're supposed to kill, but in India, they didn't even do that when they were in charge. Also, the US didn't exist in 632 AD. Heck, Muhammad didn't even know our CONTINENT existed, so I don't see how any instructions about killing Americans could be in the Quran.
So what, specifically, do you mean by your comment? Have you read the Quran? And while there are some snarky comments about Jews, the context of them is that the early Muslims were fighting a specific group of them at the time. Those comments don't apply to Jews in general. The ones trying to kill us don't understand the Quran worth shit. And they won't try to kill us if we don't offend their twisted version of Islam, namely, if we stay the hell out of their countries. Osama's beef with us involves our troops in Saudi Arabia.

bob,

I believe that you should have said that most Democrats aren't YOUR kind of Christians. Most of us try to live by the "Love One Another" doctrine.

I firmly believe that it is much better to pull my friends out of a hole than it is to climb into the hole with them. The Bush policy towards foreign policy appears to be to dig the hole deep enough to bury us all.

How many decades must the senseless killings go on before people like you realize that no good can ever come of it?

Seems what you're saying is that Democrats can be good Republicans too. It gets a little tiresome, Democrats unable to stake out their own turf, afraid of their own constituency, running away from real issues ...

I don't care if Democrats can run a good "War on Terror". The WOT is a public relations gambit, based on rule by fear. If Democrats are good at it too, more's the pity.
