You Know I am Nerdiest Of All.
Craig recently pointed us to the Nerd Quiz for which he scored rather high. Well, I am doing something right now that always makes me feel like I outdistance the competetion by miles. First, I am a Linux user, which must put me way up there on its own. But right this second I am compiling a new kernel from the latest sources at Kernel.org. Here is a screen shot.
Now, I am not saying anything about anyone elses nerditude. If you have a blog or are reading a blog, you just might be a nerd. I am just saying that it is 1:38 on a Saturday Night and I am blogging to kill time while my kernel is compiling. I'm just sayin', that's all.

Being a Linux nerd myself, I am curious what flavor you use. I am a Gentoo fan myself but have tried quite a few others.
Criptes Sam, Gentoo? You guys compile everything ;)
It has been a long saga. I started with Redhat, then went to Suse. Stopped off with Madrake for a while, but then Mandrake became Mandriva and just didn't work so well. Then I went back to Suse for a bit, for the past two years it has been all about the Ubuntu.
Since I cut my teeth Suse, I am a big fan of KDE, so I actually use KUbuntu, but thats a minor distinction. To me, Ubuntu is the best distro yet, but I can see the reasons for liking Gentoo.
At my office, there are 4 linux users, evenly split between Gentoo and Ubuntu. I don't go near the gentoo users out of fear that they'll try and compile me ;)
I'll be mighty relieved when you guys get over this nerdy talk and start speaking English again...
Ubuntu seems too easy. I feel like I haven't really experienced installing Linux without having something not work the first time around. I've installed Ubuntu at least three times on a couple different boxes and it's been perfectly smooth each time.
Shane, what do you like about KDE over Gnome? I haven't seen any major differences, but I haven't used KDE much.
A few months ago I tried out Ubuntu. I guess I'm too used to Gentoo. I couldn't get Ubuntu to do anything I wanted. I tried and cursed and tried some more and finally gave up and went back to Gentoo. I can always get it to do exactly what I want. I might have to compile something quite a few times but when I'm done, it works the way I want.
Speedkill I wish I could answer your question but I have no experience with Gnome. I use KDE all the time and never have had a reason to look at Gnome so I have no experience to compare with.
NERDS!!!
Jeff,
Ubuntu is too easy sometimes. I have to break things on purpose so that I can fix them ;)
Eh, KDE over Gnome? Well, I like the file manager(Konquer) in KDE from than Nautilus. In some ways, it seems like Gnome tries too hard to be like windows (hiding everything from the user) where KDE still exposes the internals. Maybe, that was how it used to be anyway. Like Sam, I have not tried Gnome in a long time.
Personally, I think KDE looks a lot better. Couple that with all the awesome artwork, themes and icons over at Kde-look.org and It just feels like home to me.
Wow..I must be a real nerd! I'm online till all hours of the morning :)
